Upcoming
Workday
Blackwater
River
Footbridge
Mark
your calendars for May 16 to join us for a service project
at Blackwater River. Park Manager (AKA
Uncle Bob) Barlow has requested our assistance in re-decking
a boardwalk on the nature trail. Excuse
the use of an overused phrase, but Bob has used all the
tools in his toolbox on this project. He
used Scouts for the demolition of the old boardwalk,
AmeriCorps to install the new pilings and joists and FPS
Alumni for the decking. Not sure if
you noticed the progression in age but there is a reason why
we are last. Our Alumni workforce is
aging and we are in need of some new (younger) workers.
If
you haven’t been to Blackwater River in a while you should
come back for a visit. The campground has
been upgraded with a remodeled restroom and campsite
improvements (including sewer hook-up). Campsites
have been reserved for us and Bob is collecting roadkill to
make sure we have something to eat.
If
camping is not your style the closest hotels are about 9
miles from the park. There is a Holiday
Inn Express 850-626-9060 and a Comfort Inn 850-623-1511
located at exit 31 on Interstate10.
If
you need a campsite please call the park at (850) 983-5363.
If you can join us for the workday please send an
email to sandy-george @earthlink.net so we have a headcount.
Regardless of
your skill level or ability, we want you to join us.
Although these activities provide much needed support
to the parks, they also serve as a social function.
Spouses, children, friends and others also are
welcome
